What is the idea?
A public gallery of animated sprite pets that live in a coding-agent terminal: 3.7k stars, 167 forks, and a submission queue where people upload their own hand-drawn creatures — including a steady stream of Chinese submissions and one rights-holder asking for a takedown.
Who would use it, and what do they get?
Non-developer user: someone who wants company on their screen — the audience that kept Shimeji alive for a decade. Finished thing: their own drawing, animated, living on their desktop.
Why would anyone bother?
Someone who wants a small creature living on their screen: the 桌宠 audience, which is teenagers and office workers, not programmers. What they walk away with is an animated companion drawn in their own hand.
What is missing today?
The pets are trapped in a terminal, where only programmers see them. The much older and much larger audience for this — the 桌面宠物 tradition, Shimeji, desktop companions — sits on ordinary desktops and phones and has been served by abandoned 2010-era freeware ever since.
What makes this one different?
Take the pipeline, drop the terminal. The interesting part is that ordinary people are drawing and submitting sprite creatures at volume; the product is 'draw one pet, get an animated desktop companion that reacts to what you are actually doing' — on Windows and macOS, where the 桌宠 audience already is. What is the sharpest thing about it?
Turning one hand-drawn character into a clean looping sprite sheet used to be an artist's afternoon. Image-to-sprite generation collapsed it to a single upload — which is the only reason a public submission queue is filling with amateur art at this rate at all.
What could kill it?
Novelty with a short half-life and no moat: the joke fades, whoever owns the terminal ships their own, and the gallery's real asset — user-submitted art — is already producing IP takedown requests (issue #651) before it has produced a cent. Desktop pets have also been free for fifteen years; charging for one is an unproven act.
Who pays, and for what?
No real revenue path beyond maybe cosmetic packs; a delightful side-project, not a company.
