Alfred Adler

Not because — in order to

Swap the cause for the purpose

Adler's individual psychology; the core of the break with Freud

Freud asks what happened to you. Adler asks what you are using it for. Why changing the question unfreezes things.

Alfred AdlerSwap the cause for the purpose

What actually happened?

The two men split in 1911, and the split was about direction. Freud looked backward for a cause; Adler looked forward for a purpose. Somebody says he cannot speak up because he was put down as a child, and Adler changes the question: what does not speaking up spare you? The answer is almost always being put down again. On this reading the past is not a cage, it is a reason that got hired. We are not determined by our experiences, but by the meanings we give them.

A cause cannot be edited; a purpose can be swapped

Because A, I cannot do B is a closed sentence, since A has already happened. Rewrite it as I avoid B in order to dodge C and C comes into view — fear of failing, of looking foolish, of being turned down. The problem moves from unchangeable to workable.

I never trained for this, so I do not apply. Ask what not applying spares you. Rejection, which you can survive; your background, which you cannot edit.

A symptom is often doing a job

Adler kept noticing that trouble quietly works for people. Putting things off protects the line I never really tried; anger buys the floor; being ill buys attention. Nobody wants to suffer, but the suffering is paying something out. See the payment and you can go and collect it another way.

The headache that arrives on presentation day may be buying an hour off being judged. Name the job and you can look for a way to do it without the headache.

Turned on other people it goes cruel

Asked of yourself this is liberating; aimed at someone else it becomes an accusation. You are depressed to get attention is both vicious and usually wrong. Adler's listener was the person who had come for help, and the question rested on real fellow feeling. Check your standing before you use it.

Telling somebody in real trouble that they chose this is not teleology, it is damage. It is a question to ask yourself, not a verdict to hand down.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: you keep explaining what you cannot do now with something that happened then.

Ask first: what does staying the same spare me? If I walked into that thing, what is the worst that actually happens?

Where it goes wrong: using it to sit in judgement on somebody else's pain; or ignoring real constraints and turning every limit into you did not want it enough.

Lines to keep

What matters is not what happened but what you make it mean.

Ask what staying exactly as you are is sparing you.
