Augustine

Grant me chastity, but not yet

The oldest sentence about putting it off

Confessions, Book VIII

Everyone quotes the prayer as a joke. Read it in place and it is an exact account of how postponement works.

AugustineThe oldest sentence about putting it off

What actually happened?

Writing in his forties, he remembers the prayer he made as a young man: Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet. He is precise about why he added the last two words. He wanted the life he was asking for, and he was afraid of being answered too soon, because he preferred the appetite satisfied rather than extinguished. Both halves of the sentence were sincere: he wanted the outcome, and he did not want today. Postponement is not a weak want. It is a want with the date left blank.

The wanting is real. So is the not yet

People who put things off get told they do not want it enough. He says the opposite: the wanting was never the weak part. Reinforcing it adds weight to the side that was already heavy, and the sentence still holds.

Stop asking whether you want it enough. Ask whether you said not yet again this week.

Not yet never expires on its own

The clause works every single day, because tomorrow is also today when it arrives. It is not one decision, it is a permit that renews itself indefinitely. Seeing that is the difference between waiting for it to lapse and tearing it up.

How many times have you said after this busy stretch? It will not run out by itself.

He feared being answered, not failing

He admits he was afraid the prayer would be granted quickly. What stalls most people is rarely the fear of not managing it. It is the loss that success would cost them today, and that loss is usually something they are quietly protecting.

Before you push yourself to start, name the one comfort that starting would take away tonight.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: you know what to do, you want it done, and you keep starting tomorrow.

Ask first: how many times this month have you said not yet? What comfort would starting cost you tonight?

Where it goes wrong: reading it as start immediately — he did not turn around that afternoon either; the point is that the permit does not expire unless somebody tears it up.

Lines to keep

He wanted the outcome. He did not want today.

Not yet is not a decision. It is a permit that renews.
