The Bhagavad Gita

Standing still in front of the line

He saw it clearly and that is why he stopped

Bhagavad Gita, chapter 1 into chapter 2: Arjuna lays down his bow

The book opens with a man who cannot move, and spends eighteen chapters on him. That structure is the argument.

The Bhagavad GitaHe saw it clearly and that is why he stopped

What actually happened?

Arjuna is the finest archer alive and the poem starts with him putting the bow down. He is not incompetent and he is not afraid of dying. He has looked across the field and seen his own teachers and cousins standing in the ranks opposite, and his limbs give way. Krishna does not tell him to stop thinking about it, and does not hurry him: he argues it through with him, for eighteen chapters. It is a book about a man who will not move.

Being stuck is usually seeing the whole cost at once

Nothing is wrong with his ability. What is wrong is that every consequence is laid out in front of him at the same moment. Load the entire road into one view and each single step becomes unbearable. That is not weakness of will, it is too much arriving together.

Narrow it. Price today's step only, and stop costing out the whole road at the same time.

He needed the argument finished, not encouragement

You can do it is useless to someone frozen, because confidence is not what has jammed. What has jammed are the specific things he cannot get past. The method of the book is to take each one out and talk it through until he is willing. That is slower than pushing.

Find the person who will argue it to the end with you, not the one who cheers.

He fights afterwards, and it is no lighter

Eighteen chapters do not make the cost disappear or the act easy. All they do is let him think it through to the bottom and then walk over there himself. Understanding is not a substitute for doing, and it does not come with relief attached.

Stop waiting for the answer that makes it feel lighter. Being able to move is the answer.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: you have understood it and costed it and you still cannot take a step.

Ask first: have you loaded the whole road into one view? What does today's step alone actually cost? Who would argue this to the end with you?

Where it goes wrong: expecting clarity to make it easy — he still had to fight, and the cost was unchanged; and someone arguing it with you is not someone deciding for you.

Lines to keep

My limbs give way and my mouth is parched.

You can do it is useless to a man who is frozen.

Thinking it through buys movement, not relief.
