What actually happened?
He told interviewers the same thing for forty years: he was not an ideologue, he was not enamoured of any theory, and reality and common sense were what guided him. One test decided everything. Does it work? Let's try it and if it does work, fine, let's continue it. If it doesn't work, toss it out, try another one. So the policy mix fits no spectrum: state-built housing next to unrestricted trade, harsh criminal law next to a sovereign fund. Inviting in multinationals was read across the developing world as selling out. He did not argue. He waited for the numbers.
The theory is the map, the result is the ground
A theory earns its keep before you set out, by choosing a starting point. Once real feedback exists it outranks the theory: when map and ground disagree, the map is wrong. Most arguments are absurd because the ground is already visible and both sides are still comparing maps.
Two camps are trading citations about whether the channel works. The team next door has been running it three months and the data is sitting there.
Working has to be defined in advance
The pragmatism has a premise people skip: what counts as working was fixed beforehand — employment, housing, savings rates, hard numbers nobody can dress up. Without that, pragmatism decays into finding a story for whatever happened.
Before starting, write down which three numbers you will look at in three months and what counts as good. Skip that and any result can be called a success.
Working costs you a decade of being wrong in public
Bringing in multinationals made him a traitor to the developing world's intellectuals in the 1960s; dependency theory said that road ended in vassalage. He carried the name for ten years until the results arrived. Anyone unwilling to pay that tax stays on the theoretically correct road.
Pick the route your industry despises and every meeting for two years is one where you are being corrected. Quit before the data lands and you took the abuse for nothing.
How do I use it today?

Ask first: can this be run small enough to produce real feedback, and can you write down today what would count as working?
Where it goes wrong: using pragmatism as putty to explain any outcome afterwards; deciding that as long as it works, no line is off limits.
