Wheat domesticated us

The luxury trap

Sapiens, chapter 5

The agricultural revolution multiplied people and made the average life worse. This is how a species can win while every member of it loses.

SapiensThe luxury trap

What actually happened?

Harari turns the standard account inside out: we did not domesticate wheat, it domesticated us. Sapiens bent over weeding, hauling water, spreading manure; the diet narrowed, the hours lengthened, disease arrived. Counted in copies of DNA, wheat became the most successful plant on earth. Counted in how a life went, the farmer did worse than the forager. He calls the agricultural revolution history's biggest fraud. The mechanism is the luxury trap: luxuries tend to become necessities and to spawn new obligations. Each step made the day easier and the sum was one-way, because by then the population was too large for the old life to feed.

A total can rise while every unit inside it falls

The species wins and the individual loses is a structure that shows up everywhere: headcount, revenue, users, gross domestic product. Aggregate measures and individual conditions are not two views of one thing. They can move apart, and they can move in opposite directions.

In the two years revenue doubled, hours per head, attrition and sick leave all rose together. The annual report and the medical notes describe the same period.

The luxury trap is a one-way door

Every new convenience arrives as an option. Once it is in use, life reorganises around it, and then it is a requirement carrying maintenance of its own. The test is simple: if this broke for a week, could I go back to how things were?

A vendor taken on to try it out, a platform adopted for now. Two years later the whole workflow has grown into it and there is nothing to unplug it from.

The exit closed when the scale changed

Why not go back to foraging? Because farming had already raised the population past what foraging could feed. Every step of expansion raises the minimum output needed just to stand still, and that floor is the real lock — harder to undo than any contract.

A team tripled on the cash flow of a new line cannot drop that line later even when it turns marginal. The opportunity became the mortgage.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: an upgrade is on the table and every step of it makes today easier.

Ask first: once this is in, how much does my minimum running cost rise, and could I go back if it broke for a week?

Where it goes wrong: refusing every tool in the name of avoiding traps, or watching the aggregate number and ignoring what is happening to the people inside it.

Lines to keep
