The page you hand the stylist

Both hair communities' own top answer is 'stop talking, show the picture' — but the highest-scoring failure post shows the picture was shown repeatedly and still missed, because a photo of someone else's hair never answers whether your head can get there

Who is in pain, and how much?

Someone is about to sit in a salon chair and pay for something that cannot be undone for three months, and the only vocabulary they have is a screenshot of a stranger's hair. Both communities have already worked out the answer — a stylist's own post telling clients to stop describing and start showing is the top post in r/Hair — and the answer still fails, because the reference photo is of a different base colour on a different head. The Chinese side is identical in shape and larger in volume: note after note on how to talk to your barber, one of them written by a barber who just says hand him picture number two.

What is missing today?

Everything sold here is on the wrong side of the chair. The AI hair apps (轻颜, YouCam, Hairstyle AI) are selfie filters: they show you a pretty preview and stop, they never say whether your level-4 box-dyed hair can reach that ash blonde in one sitting, and they never produce anything you can hand to the person holding the scissors. The salon-side software is booking and CRM, sold to the shop. Nobody makes the one page that goes with you: feasibility first (how many sessions, what has to be bleached, what your ends can survive), then the preview on your own head, then the instruction sheet in the words stylists actually use — including the one line every thread says is missing, what must not be touched.

What would kill it?

A stylist may read the page as an insult — 'an app told me it can be done' against twelve years of their hands — and the whole thing dies at the chair. And this is a four-times-a-year, near-zero-retention errand: acquisition cost plausibly exceeds lifetime value, which is exactly why nobody has built it. Meitu or 轻颜 shipping one 'put it on my own head' filter absorbs half the product in a week, and the feasibility half is the half that can be confidently wrong — one bad call and you have talked someone into frying their hair.

What would you do differently?

Do one job, dyeing, and refuse the rest. Two photos in — your hair now, the inspo — three things out: whether it can be done in one session, a preview rendered on your own head, and a printable A4 page in stylist vocabulary with a 'do not touch' line. Never a price argument, never a complaint file after the fact — that is a different, uglier product. Cold start in Chinese: comment under the Xiaohongshu 怎么和理发师沟通 and 男生碎盖 notes, offering to write the one-pager free from two photos. Cold start in English: work the r/Hair and r/femalehairadvice 'what I asked for vs what I got' threads, one free brief per thread.

What did real people actually say?

Verbatim from the public sources linked above, not paraphrased: “Show them the picture. I'm a stylist and prefer people to show me inspo pictures because being completely honest, ppl don't really know what they're talking about. Not that I expect them to full on know every hair styling term, but they just don't always mean the same thing. There's about 5 different haircuts I've seen labelled as “wolfcut”. “Cowboy copper” is about 10 different copper colors (sometimes not even copper)” — r/Hair, 《Stop verbally telling your stylists what you want》 520 points / 156 comments — written by a practising stylist “I’ve been going to the same stylist for over 20 years and I still take her pics.” — same thread, top comment 266 points — twenty years of trust does not remove the need “I asked for a gloss toner (redkin I think??) and showed her the reference picture and this is what I ended up with and I’m so upset. ...
