Who is in pain, and how much?
Someone booking their first tattoo has a feeling, a story and three saved screenshots, and a consultation in which they must turn all of it into position, size in centimetres, line weight, black-and-grey or colour, and which parts the artist may change. They are frightened of being rude and frightened of being permanent, and the top-voted Chinese guide ends with the tell: don't be too shy to speak up. Both sides have written the checklist; nobody fills it in for you.
What is missing today?
The checklist exists and is popular — a 1185-like Xiaohongshu note lays out all seven things to settle before the needle, and the English threads say plainly that arriving with a reference sheet beats describing it — but a checklist is a blank form, and a first-timer is exactly the person who cannot fill it in. Meanwhile every AI tattoo product on the market races to generate the design, which is the one thing this community actively rejects: the highest-signal comment in the etiquette thread is about proving you did not lift another artist's work. So the tools that exist are aimed at the forbidden half, and the wanted half — the brief — has nobody making it.
What would kill it?
Consultation is the artist's own job, so a layer in between can offend both ends at once. Frequency is brutal: a handful of tattoos in a lifetime, so acquisition cost dwarfs the ticket. And the community's hostility to AI is not abstract — if anything you make reads as 'AI art', every channel you were using to reach people closes the same day, which means the product has to be visibly, provably not a picture generator.
What would you do differently?
Ship the brief and refuse the drawing. A short interview — one sentence of why, where on the body, size, black-and-grey or colour, what must survive, what the artist may freely change — out comes one bilingual page you send before the appointment, with a letter-by-letter spelling check for any text and the three billing questions the Chinese checklist already names. Reference images are organised and attributed, never generated, and the page says so at the top.
