One number, on your machine
r/espresso help threads carry the machine in the title — [Sage Barista Express], [Bambino Plus + Turin DF54] — the community has encoded in its own title format that the answer depends on your exact machine, and the tools that exist only log brews instead of naming the one number to change next
Who is in pain, and how much?
Someone bought an entry-level machine and a grinder, and every cup comes out sour. They change three things at once, it gets worse, and the beans are gone: one poster is a kilo down and about to return the machine. The general advice — grind finer, ratio 1:2, 25 to 30 seconds — is everywhere and does not survive contact with their particular grinder, which is exactly why the community writes the model in brackets in the title.
What is missing today?
The community has done the hard part of the schema for free: help posts are titled '[Sage Barista Express]', '[Breville Bambino Plus]', '[Bambino Plus + Turin DF54]' because everyone knows the answer is machine-specific. Nobody has turned that into a product. Brew-logging apps record what you did and leave the inference to you; recipe sites give a target, not a next step; and the failure mode of a beginner is changing several variables at once, which no log corrects. The missing artifact is small and specific: change this one number, by this much, and here is what the next cup should taste like if you were right.
What would kill it?
Espresso advice is a subculture with strong opinions and a wrong call gets shouted down; the same beginners are also being told the honest answer is 'your grinder is the problem, buy a better one', which no software can fix. Ceiling is modest — someone dials in once and stops needing you — so this only works if it also earns the next thing (bean-to-recipe, machine change), and that is an unproven second step.
What would you do differently?
Two tastes only — sour or bitter — across the three most common starter machines. Input is the machine, the grinder, dose, yield, time and one word for the taste. Output is a single-variable card: the one setting to change, by how much, what the next cup should taste like if the guess was right, and where to fall back if it was not, capped at five shots. Refuse to change two things at once and say why on the card. What did real people actually say?
Verbatim from the public sources linked above, not paraphrased: “I'm about to return this thing as I'm losing my mind. I've wasted a full 1kg of coffee beans and nothing has even come close to tasting like coffee. I'm on a second bag with a different brand and it's still not improving.” — r/espresso《Unable to dial in brand new setup - have wasted 1kg of beans! [Bambino Plus + Turin DF54]》320 points / 289 comments “I'm completely lost. Every espresso I make is sour no matter what I change. What am I missing?” — r/espresso, 72 points / 158 comments
How much work is it?
