What actually happened?
He described his trade in company nobody expected: I trade as Yi Yin planned, as Sun Tzu fought, as Shang Yang legislated. Having claimed that much, he set a bar to match. A man short of the wit to adapt, the courage to decide, the humanity to give, or the strength to hold, he would not teach at all. Four conditions, and no partial admission. Sima Qian closes by noting that everyone in the empire who talked about making a living traced it back to him.
Each one guards a different stage
Wit reads the situation, courage commits while the information is still short, humanity decides what to give away and to whom, strength holds the position through the stretch when nothing confirms it. They sit on one chain. Break a link and the other three stop paying.
Seeing it clearly and not acting is the same as not seeing it. Acting and being shaken out halfway is the same as never starting.
The third one is about splitting, not about being nice
The humanity he means is the ability to give and to take: when to leave margin on the table, for whom, and how much. It is the condition people underrate most. Plenty of operators can read a market perfectly and still lose every partner they have.
Keeping the whole margin in your own link makes this year's accounts look best. Next year your suppliers and channels are all working for someone else.
He was willing to say a person should not do this
The refusal is the striking part. He did not offer to build the missing quality on the job. Some methods have prerequisites, and a prerequisite is not a development area; handing the method to someone without it is not kindness.
Give a strategy that requires betting on thin information to someone who needs proof before deciding. That is not low effort. It is the wrong fit.
