Take what the others drop
Buy in the good year, sell in the lean one
Records of the Grand Historian, Biographies of the Money-makers
Everyone knows buy low, sell high. What is missing is the part that makes it something a person can actually execute.
What actually happened?
His rule was eight characters long: when the world sells, I buy; when the world buys, I sell. In practice it was a calendar. In a good harvest he bought grain and sold silk and lacquer; when the cocoons came to market he bought silk floss and sold grain. Two crops whose cycles never line up, so one side is always cheap. Sima Qian writes that when the moment came he moved like a wild beast or a bird of prey. The rest of the year he ate plain food and lived alongside his own workmen.
The hard part is being alone in it
When everyone is selling you are the only buyer, which means no colleague's judgement to check against and nobody to share the loss with. The price is low precisely because the consensus is on the other side, and consensus works by making you doubt yourself.
Entering a category everyone is leaving is not a money problem. It is six months with no outside signal agreeing with you.
His signal was the harvest, not his nerve
He was not contrarian by temperament. He had observable inputs: which crop was in, what the year had been, how the cycles ran. Buying the bottom does not take courage; it takes a source of information that is independent of what the market is feeling.
Whether to spend more on a channel or pull out of it is answered by your own cost per customer and retention curve, not by who else is buying there.
The crowd opens the window and the crowd closes it
The line about the bird of prey is usually skipped. All that patience exists to reach a moment that the consensus itself created, and the moment ends when the consensus turns. So there is no time to be slow, and no room for a small trial first.
The acquisition you waited two years for finally agrees to talk, and your own approval chain takes three months. The waiting was supposed to include preparing that.
How do I use it today?
Where you are: something is priced low and every sensible person is leaving.
Ask first: is my reason for calling it cheap independent of what the market is feeling today?
Where it goes wrong: treating contrarianism as a stance with no signal behind it, and then wanting to test the moment with a small position when it finally arrives.
Lines to keep
When the world sells, I buy. When the world buys, I sell.
He seized the moment like a wild beast or a bird of prey.
Cheap is what consensus looks like from the other side.
