Murray Bowen

In the relationship and still yourself

Fusion and cut-off are the same failure

Bowen family systems theory

With family it is either being swept along or getting out. Whether there is a third road.

Murray BowenFusion and cut-off are the same failure

What actually happened?

Bowen's central term is differentiation of self. Differentiation is staying in emotional contact with people and still being yourself. Low differentiation takes two forms that look opposite and share a root: one goes along, so that when somebody at home is unhappy you concede, and the other stops going home at all. He calls the first fusion and the second emotional cut-off, and neither of them is being yourself inside a relationship. He also watched anxiety move through a family faster than reason: one person tightens, the whole house tightens, and nobody can say why.

Cut-off is not a solution, it is being governed from further away

Refusing contact looks like taking control back, and the other person still sets your position: you have to keep spending distance in order to hold yourself together. Real differentiation means you can go back, and your position does not collapse once you are in the room.

Pressed about marriage over the new year: miserable all evening is fusion, never going home again is cut-off. The third road is going as usual, not arguing and not changing your mind.

Deal with your own anxiety first

If anxiety travels through the system, a parent managing their own share does more than any technique aimed at the child. This is Bowen's most usable conclusion and his hardest, because the first move in it is admitting that the anxiety is yours.

Your worry about his future arrives whether or not you say a word about it. Handle your part and his state often changes on its own.

It runs down the generations, and it can be raised

Your level is largely set in the family you grew up in, and it gets handed on. It can also be lifted deliberately, and the practice happens in the relationship most likely to sweep you off: I know you are unhappy, I understand, and my view has not changed.

Every time you meet a relative's feeling without going cold and without surrendering, the capacity grows a little, and the next generation starts higher up.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: contact with your family and you are carried off by the feeling in the room.

Ask first: is this fusion, where I go miserable and concede, or cut-off, where I stop turning up? Is there a third road — stay in the room, position unchanged?

Where it goes wrong: reading differentiation as a licence for coldness. Not being swept off is not the same as not caring.

Lines to keep

Differentiation is staying connected to people and still being yourself.

Anxiety travels the family system and lands on the most vulnerable member.

Cut-off looks independent. The other person still sets your position.
