Imagination

Albert Einstein (Germany · 1879–1955) — Imagination.

What actually happened?

On 6 November 1919 the Royal Society heard the results of the eclipse expeditions: starlight had bent as general relativity predicted. The next morning he was famous everywhere, which is not a thing that had happened to a physicist before. He was dry about it. If the theory turns out to be right, he wrote, Germany will claim me as a German and France will call me a citizen of the world; if it turns out wrong, France will call me a German and Germany will call me a Jew. The theory had not changed between the two sentences. Only the audience had.

The thought experiment

His central instrument was not mathematics but the Gedankenexperiment: build an idealised situation in your head and follow its logic until it breaks. Special relativity came from riding the beam of light; general relativity from a man in a falling lift, who cannot feel his own weight — an idea he later called the happiest of his life.

Before building the thing, describe the impossible version of it and see which assumption has to give. That assumption is the actual project.

Thirty years of being wrong, in public

He spent his last three decades trying to unify relativity with quantum mechanics and did not get there. He would not accept the probabilistic reading and said so — God does not play dice. Experiment has sided against him ever since. But the objection forced the field to say precisely what it meant, and a first-rate error did more than most careful agreement.

The colleague who will not let a claim past without making it exact is doing work even when their own position is the one that loses.

Curiosity is the whole engine

No special talent, only passionately curious — he said it too often for it to be modesty. He held the question about the beam of light for ten years because he wanted to know, not because anyone asked. Learning driven by curiosity and learning driven by obligation reach different depths, because only one of them keeps going past the requirement.

You can tell which kind you are on by what happens the week after the deadline.

Responsibility does not end at the discovery

A Jew and a pacifist, driven out after 1933, he signed the 1939 letter urging the United States to take fission seriously — and after Hiroshima spent the rest of his life on disarmament, calling that signature his one great mistake. Pushing the boundary and carrying what comes over it are the same job.

Whoever builds the capability is not automatically the person who decides how it is used — but they are never simply a bystander to it either.

How do I use it today?

Next time something is declared impossible, run his order of operations: first ask whether physics forbids it; then build the idealised version in your head and follow it through. A great many impossible things turn out to be current tools cannot, which is a different sentence with a different expiry date.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.
