Huineng
The practice is here, not elsewhere
There is no better place to start
Platform Sutra, chapters two and three
People wait for a quiet enough setting to begin. Why Huineng said that setting doesn't exist.
What actually happened?
Asked whether a layperson could practise at home, Huineng was flat about it: the teaching is in the world, and awakening is not apart from the world; to seek it outside the world is to hunt for a rabbit's horns — the thing simply isn't there. He pulled the whole practice back into daily life: if the mind is level, what need of precepts; if conduct is straight, what need of meditation. He lived it too — after receiving the transmission he spent fifteen years among a band of hunters, taking the days as they came.
There is no better place to begin
Waiting for a quieter environment, an emptier calendar, a riper moment is itself a form of avoidance. To seek it outside the world is to hunt a rabbit's horns — the fully-prepared place doesn't exist, because the conditions never all arrive.
'I'll start exercising when this project ends.' There is another project after it. People who start, start while busy.
The ordinary thing in front of you is the training ground
Huineng breaks practice down into specific actions inside specific relationships: how you treat your parents, how you treat those above and below, what you do when treated unfairly. None of it needs separate time. It already occupies all of your time; it just wasn't counted as practice.
The hardest call of the day and the message you least want to answer are that day's entire curriculum.
Complete form isn't the same as the thing done right
'What need of precepts, what need of meditation' doesn't abolish either. It warns that form serves substance. When someone's forms are immaculate, that is often exactly when the substance has gone wrong — the form became the substitute.
The team with the most beautiful process documentation is sometimes the worst at executing. The document felt like the work.
How do I use it today?
Where you are: you're waiting for a better moment to begin something that matters.
Ask first: if that moment never arrives, what is the smallest step available today?
Where it goes wrong: turning preparation into procrastination; substituting completeness of form for completion of substance.
Lines to keep
The teaching is in the world. Awakening is not apart from it.
If the mind is level, what need of precepts.
