A transition is the dangerous window
When the old method stops fitting
The Confidence Game, on when a mark is vulnerable
One person's judgement is roughly constant across a life, yet the losses cluster in a few stretches. This is about which ones.
What actually happened?
Her answer is the transition. Cons land most easily in periods of upheaval, when something new is happening and the old way of reading the world no longer covers it. A move to an unfamiliar city, a divorce, a death, redundancy, retirement, a sum of money arriving. What these share is not fragility, it is the absence of a usable template, which is why any explanation that hangs together sounds unusually credible. The practical value is direct: it turns not being conned from a personality into a calendar.
The risk is a missing template, not low spirits
The real problem in a transition is that old experience does not map onto the new situation. You have never rented in this city, never handled an estate, never held this much money. What is missing is a reference, and a reference is exactly what the con supplies.
Newly arrived somewhere, you have no idea what a normal price looks like. That gap is the window.
Put the dangerous months in the diary
This is the operational part. For the first months after a move, a new job, a death or a large payment, add a procedure in advance: anything above a set amount goes past somebody who is not inside the situation with you.
Every large decision in these three months gets run past this person. Agreed beforehand, it is far more reliable than judging it in the moment.
The same window rebuilds, so do not only defend
In the same stretch that old templates stop working, new habits and relationships form most easily. So a transition should not be spent entirely on defence. Split it: put procedure around judgement, and do more, not less, of the meeting people.
Newly moved, be careful about contracts and transfers. Do not be careful about getting to know anyone.
How do I use it today?
Where you are: you have just been through a large change, a new city, a new job, a divorce, a death, or money arriving.
Ask first: which decisions in the next three months have no precedent for you? Put a step in front of those and find somebody outside the situation to look.
Where it goes wrong: spending the whole transition on defence and avoiding the relationships you should be building. It asks for procedure around judgement, not a wall around your life.
Lines to keep
Cons land hardest when something new is happening in your life.
The danger is not that you are weak. You have no template.
