What actually happened?
Wei Zheng had served the rival crown prince and had argued for killing him. After the Xuanwu Gate, Li Shimin did not execute Wei Zheng; he gave him a senior post whose actual work was finding fault with the emperor. One day he was handling a fine sparrowhawk on his arm and saw Wei Zheng coming. He pushed the bird into his sleeve. Wei Zheng pretended to notice nothing and made his report slowly. By the time he left, the bird had suffocated. Taking counsel is not only listening. It is being changed by it.
A man as a mirror
With bronze as a mirror you straighten your dress; with history as a mirror you see the rise and fall of states; with a man as a mirror you see your own gains and losses. When Wei Zheng died he said he had lost a mirror. Real counsel is not a performance of openness; it is treating the critic as an instrument.
He was publicly contradicted many times, went back to his quarters furious, and never moved against the man. He knew what losing him would cost.
Use the enemy's advisers
Wei Zheng and Yuchi Jingde had both been on the other side. His rule was that talent outranks a record of loyalty and ability outranks origin. The core of the Zhenguan administration was assembled out of people who had opposed him.
The person who argued hardest against your plan usually understands its weak points better than anyone who agreed.
The debt from the Xuanwu Gate
Sima Guang's verdict is that the deed succeeded and the killing of kin remained a stain on his virtue. He carried it for life, and it is part of why he had to keep paying in the quality of his government. A person carrying a moral debt often works harder than one who is clean.
Something that cannot be undone can still be the reason the next twenty years are done properly.
Reduce, and keep reducing
Lighter taxes, less forced labour, fewer punishments. He preferred an empty treasury to an exhausted population, and turned inherited quietism into something active: stop disturbing people, and build the institutions at the same time.
Households in the empire went from roughly two million to three point eight million during the reign. That is the least arguable scorecard governance has.
How do I use it today?
Ask whether there is anyone near you whose job is to tell you you are wrong and who pays nothing for doing it. If there is not, you are missing the instrument, not the information. Name the role at the next significant decision and say out loud that arguing the other side will not count against them.
