Liu Bang

Turning the sentence around

A foot under the table, and a new answer

Records of the Grand Historian: Biography of the Marquis of Huaiyin, and the Annals of Emperor Gaozu

Half the sentence is out of your mouth before you see it is wrong. What he did next looks bad, and was right every time.

Liu BangA foot under the table, and a new answer

What actually happened?

Han Xin, having taken Qi, sent a letter asking to be made acting king of it. Liu Bang, penned in at the time and waiting daily to be relieved, read it and swore at the messenger. Zhang Liang and Chen Ping trod on his foot under the table. He understood, kept swearing without a pause, and turned the whole sentence around: a real man who settles the feudal lords becomes a real king, so what is this acting? Zhang Liang was sent with the seal to install Han Xin properly.

Turning round beats being right the first time

His first reaction was wrong, and already spoken. What he had was not accuracy but the ability to change track the instant a signal arrived, and to fold the first half of the sentence into the new direction. People differ in judgement. They differ far more in turning speed.

You state a view, a colleague adds a fact you did not have. Say that changes it, in the room, and watch how much more people bring you next quarter.

Keep a channel open for the foot

None of this works unless somebody nearby dares to tread on your foot while you are shouting, and unless you know what the pressure means. That channel is not a gift of character. It is built by years of letting yourself be interrupted and not punishing it.

If nobody will cut across you when you are wrong, every error you make gets carried out in full, at full speed, by people who could see it.

Face is the cheapest chip on the table

Reversing looks bad, and reversing from a curse to a coronation looks worse. He never hesitated at these moments, because he treated his own dignity as a cost he could pay at any time. Xiang Yu priced it high, at Hong Gate and again at the river.

Letting the team run three more months rather than admit the call was wrong saves one bad afternoon and spends a quarter.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: mid-sentence, and you have just realised the judgement behind it is wrong.

Ask first: which costs more, finishing this sentence or turning it round now? Price both before you decide which one hurts.

Where it goes wrong: treating the reversal as a loss of face and pushing through; or having nobody around you who is allowed to stop you mid-flow.

Lines to keep

A man who settles the lords becomes a real king. Why acting?

Zhang Liang and Chen Ping trod on his foot, then spoke into his ear.

The king of Han understood, and went on swearing.
