Peter Lynch

The tenbagger at the mall

Noticing is only the first step

One Up on Wall Street

Invest in what you know is his most quoted line and his most misused. The half that gets dropped is the work.

Peter LynchNoticing is only the first step

What actually happened?

He ran Magellan for thirteen years at twenty-nine per cent a year, and his signature find came from a supermarket. His wife liked a pair of tights called L'eggs, so he looked into the maker, Hanes, and the stock became one of his best. Investing without research, he warns in the same book, is like playing stud poker and never looking at the cards. The find is a lead, not a decision. And the amateur's real edge, he argues, is seeing the change in your own work and life six months to a year before Wall Street.

What you see on the floor is a leading indicator

An analyst reads the quarterly. You see what feeds it: which brand keeps going out of stock, which store has a queue, which supplier everyone in your trade is quietly switching to. Those run about two quarters ahead, provided you log them as leads instead of retelling them as anecdotes.

Purchasing notices a small supplier's lead times suddenly full; sales notices a client's budget line has been renamed. Industry reports write that up half a year later.

Between liking a product and buying a company sits a questionnaire

A good product answers the demand side only. His checklist is on the supply side: how much of the revenue comes from this, how heavy the debt is, how many years of growth remain, whether the success can be repeated. Most I use it so I understand it losses skip that page.

A heavy user buys shares in a favourite app without checking that its cost of acquiring a customer already exceeds what a customer spends.

Knowing it well has its own blind spot

Investing inside your own industry gives a real information advantage and a real emotional debt. You will overrate the importance of your own link in the chain and underrate whatever is replacing it from outside. Use the knowledge to check facts, not to reach conclusions.

Nobody understands the value of the channel better than the people who run it, and nobody is slower to admit it is being bypassed.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: something in ordinary life looks like an opportunity and you want to act on it.

Ask first: have I finished the checklist, meaning how it earns, whether that repeats, and what it owes?

Where it goes wrong: reading invest in what you know as invest in what you like; or the reverse, sitting on a real front-line advantage and deferring to reports.

Lines to keep

Never invest in any idea you can't illustrate with a crayon.

The person that turns over the most rocks wins the game.
