What actually happened?
The baboons made the second half of the argument. In a well-fed troop with few predators, most of the day goes on each other, so their stress hormones track social position rather than physical danger. Low-ranking animals ran chronically elevated cortisol and worse health across the board — and the exceptions were the ones with allies and with some ability to predict when they'd be harassed. That is where the real variable turned out to be: not how hard the pressure is, but whether it can be foreseen and whether you have anyone.
Duration, not intensity
A week-long sprint damages nobody. Two years of being permanently on call does. The question isn't how tired you've been lately but when the system was last actually switched off.
The bill is charged where you can't see it
What gets paused under stress is immunity, digestion and tissue repair, and those debts don't show the same day — which is why people misjudge how well they're coping until the symptoms arrive.
Predictability and control beat reducing the load
At the same pressure, knowing when it's coming and having some say over order and pace cuts the damage sharply. Which moves the intervention from 'reduce stress' to 'add certainty' — usually far cheaper.
How do I use it today?
If you've been tense a long time with nothing specific wrong, ask when this system was last genuinely off. If you're managing people through something hard, give a firm date rather than a better outcome: people adapt to a certain bad and don't adapt to hanging. And swap 'these five, in this order' for 'these five, you choose the order' — same load, different physiology.
