Zeng Guofan

Watched when nobody is watching

The stretch of the day with no observer

Zeng Guofan's diaries and family letters

He set himself twelve daily disciplines and kept the record for thirty years. This asks why changing yourself is the one item available daily.

Zeng GuofanThe stretch of the day with no observer

What actually happened?

At thirty he resolved to learn to be a sage, and was taught a method: write the diary every day, go through every thought and act in it, and enter the wrong ones and the bad impulses exactly as they were. He recorded a lewd thought on seeing a friend's womenfolk. He recorded the self-disgust after talking too big in company. Then the harder step — he passed the diary round his friends, which turned private self-examination into something with an audience. Watchfulness when alone stands first among the four maxims of his last years.

Watchfulness alone installs an absent audience

Anybody keeps the rules while being watched. The test is the stretch when nobody is. His answer was not willpower but record-keeping: write it down and the moment acquires a witness. Where systems cannot reach, a record reaches part of the way.

Expenses nobody audits, code nobody reviews, a report nobody reads. The standard in those three places describes a person better than any appraisal.

The value of a daily discipline is its grain size

I will become more disciplined cannot be executed. His twelve were checkable actions: rise early, sit in stillness, read one book at a time, keep the diary, note what was said over tea, let no month pass forgetting what he could do. Small enough to judge today.

Read more this year cannot be settled in December. Ten pages a day and three lines written afterwards can be ticked tonight. One is a wish, the other a discipline.

Being seen is the cheapest constraint

Circulating the diary cost him almost nothing and did far more than resolve did. This is not performance, it is deliberately importing an outside correction, because a person's estimate of himself always runs high and honesty alone will not bring it down.

Post this week's commitments where other people read them. Completion rises sharply against the same list kept privately. The difference is not resolve.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: you have set the goal many times and it has disappeared by the third week every time.

Ask first: can tonight's version of this be answered with did it or did not do it?

Where it goes wrong: goals made entirely of adjectives; or keeping the whole self-examination inside your own head, where no outside person will ever see it.

Lines to keep

Watchfulness when alone brings peace of mind.

Steady work that never breaks off beats a burst of courage.

Do not go out to meet the future or cling to the past.

Same situation, other people are asking

It isn't that I lack resolve. I have two, and they fight.I understand every word of it and I still don't move.I've practiced for months and can't tell which part I'm doing wrong.Knowing it hasn't once been enough.I know better and still don't do it · all 10 questions →
