What actually happened?
Wherever the Xiang Army arrived it did not attack. It camped: trench, wall, stockade, and no fighting until the work was finished. Cities were not stormed either. A long trench was cut the whole way round and pulled tighter ring by ring, which turned taking a city from an event full of accidents into a matter of time and supply. Anqing was held under siege for over a year, Tianjing for more than two. The method was mocked as dull. It also had a property nobody else's had: no single mistake could collapse it.
Be unbeatable first, then discuss winning
The entire purpose of the solid camp is to take I could be destroyed off the board. Once that is done, what is left is time. This is not conservatism. It converts the outcome from a question of probability into a question of arithmetic.
