Three Gates Before an Agent Can Spend Your Money: Trust, Authorization, Merchant Readiness

Clink and Visa completed the first agent payment, but the industry is stuck at three gates: trust, authorization and merchant readiness; fiat got there first because of consumer protection, while stablecoins are still solving irreversibility.

It has real cases — a 200 HKD limit, a token that burned over 600 USD — plus a protocol map of Stripe, Visa, OpenAI and Google, denser with information than most AI narratives.

Two scenarios for agent shopping

Gao Ning and Patrick split Agent Payment into two categories. One is e-commerce shopping and service booking driven by an explicit user need, where the agent executes and the final consumer is still a person; the other is spending the agent generates itself while executing a task — calling APIs, buying research reports, downloading materials — small in amount but high in frequency, and it needs to happen autonomously within an authorized limit. The former is large in volume and long in the chain; the latter is a new scenario, currently happening mainly inside conversations between users and closed-source models such as OpenAI and Claude.

Three gates: trust, authorization, merchant readiness

Patrick argues the biggest problem today is not technology but three links. First, the agent's intelligence and recommendation quality have not yet won user trust — understanding your context does not mean understanding what you like; second, the agent cannot be trusted to hold card information, and once a chargeback happens the responsibility falls on the user; third, merchants are uneasy about who owns the customer relationship when an agent places an order, and agent penetration among ordinary users is low, so the ROI on large-scale merchant investment is insufficient — which is why merchant readiness is progressing slowly.

Clink × Visa VIC: the first transaction

Patrick describes the partnership with Visa: Clink is positioned as the first agent enableer in Visa's global production network. At the end of June it executed the first VIC transaction at an expo. The flow: the agent passes the user context, authorized amount and product category to Clink, which records it as a mandate; after the agent finds the product, Clink verifies it matches the original authorization, then applies to Visa for a one-time payment capability, and Visa verifies and completes the payment. This mechanism makes the final chain of accountability clear.

Why fiat beats stablecoins

Patrick explains why Clink chose fiat over stablecoins: consumer protection mechanisms in the fiat system are mature, banks and card networks have complete processes for authorization and dispute handling, so the trust problem is easier to solve; once a stablecoin payment goes out it is essentially irreversible, which damages consumer confidence and sustained trust. A guest then adds a real case: after a company laid off an employee, a certain token burned over 600 USD overnight with no way to trace it, and the company later had to switch to individual APIs per person so it could be traced.

Stablecoins are building an on-chain Alipay

Gao Ning describes progress in the stablecoin track. Within the stablecoin system, simple small transfers are already fairly mature, because on-chain payment is end-to-end transfer. More interesting is that some people are trying to solve Taobao's early problem: buyers and merchants not trusting each other. The approach is to lock the money in a neutral place with a smart contract and release it to the merchant after delivery is confirmed, solving the irreversibility of "paid but not shipped". Gao Ning thinks the small-amount, high-frequency infrastructure is no longer lacking; what is missing is scenario richness and the migration of user habits.

Clink is a ramp between highways

Patrick says Clink is not building a new highway but connecting roads to roads. A user may come from OpenAI's ACP protocol while the merchant uses Shopify or Stripe; between different protocols, different payment companies and different e-commerce platforms, someone needs to do the conversion and bridging. Clink's strategy is to be as compatible as possible with UCP and ACP, and to build plugins for e-commerce platforms such as Shopify and Magento, so merchants can onboard at low cost and become agent payment ready without changing their existing OMS and order systems.

China's payment ecosystem takes a different path

Gao Ning says China has no overseas card-network chargeback/appeal system — disputes are more like customer complaints, and responsibility is assigned differently. But electronic payment penetration is extremely high and the infrastructure is mature; it is only a matter of time. Tencent is working on an Agent card and Alipay has announced the AMP protocol, but no scenario has landed yet. The host adds that WeChat's Agent ecosystem may launch within a few months and is being tested with several large merchants — so the first large-scale agent payment might happen in China first.

Signals to watch in the next year

Patrick names two signals: first, users genuinely having an aha moment because an agent found them something good they had not thought of, breaking out of the recommendation algorithm's "too well" information cocoon; second, more and more people starting to call paid external digital services rather than only using tokens themselves. Gao Ning has a more personal hope: he has been using GPT to discuss his gastroenteritis symptoms and got a probiotic recommendation, but in the end he still had to go to another platform to place the order and get a prescription. He wants that flow to go straight from conversation to order and delivery to his home, and he judges it will happen faster in China.

In their own words · checked verbatim

And the second aspect is, well, today an agent really can complete payment directly, and there's still a lot of authorization and trust information flow in that. Because an agent, at least as I see it right now, cannot be trusted to hold your card information.

Patrick8:32

If I had to describe Clink, it's more like: there are many highways now. And between road and road — because you don't know where the user came from, and you don't know where the merchant ultimately is headed — between these roads you may need some ramps.

Patrick23:24

When a payment company puts out its own protocol, is it fair and impartial — is it both referee and player?

Patrick25:28

From now on, you just give me a task and the money gets deducted on its own; don't make me do the authorization in the middle anymore.

Gao Ning28:29

If I can read this content myself for free, and he charges to look at it — then I definitely won't pay.

Patrick35:39

I hope he can do it in one order. Just tell me directly — hey, do you need this, help me connect with a doctor, help me place an order for something. If a prescription is needed, then can it just place the order directly and have it delivered to my home.
