The line is on film, so it is not something admirers put in his mouth later. What it describes is an operation.
What actually happened?
In 1971, on Pierre Berton's programme, he said it: empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. Put water into a cup and it becomes the cup; into a bottle and it becomes the bottle; into a teapot and it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend. It is not improvised poetry. It is the summary of his whole system: he came out of Wing Chun and then dismantled the school, because any fixed form is a way of announcing your next move to the person in front of you.
A fixed form is an announcement
A set sequence can be studied, predicted and prepared for. Water has no preferred shape, so there is no pattern to study. Staying formless is not an absence of capability; it is a refusal to let capability harden into something someone else can rehearse against.
A company whose promotions always land at month end and whose launches always follow the same beats can be answered by a plan written a month in advance.
Fit the container; do not flatter it
Water in a cup takes the shape of the cup and is still water — it can leave whenever it likes. Shape follows container means total softness of form over something that does not move at all. People who learn only the first half stop knowing what they are after three containers.
How you talk to different customers is form. What you will quote and what you will ship is the water. The first should change constantly; the second goes into every cup unchanged.
Softness and force are one property
He adds the second half deliberately: water can flow, or it can crash. People treat yielding and power as two options. Water shows they are the same thing — precisely because it does not fight the container, all of its energy is still available for the stone it intends to wear through.
The person who declines to fight over process, seating and tone arrives at the one thing that matters with everything still in hand.
How do I use it today?
Where you are: the method you are proud of is being made irrelevant by a change around you.
Ask first: which part of me is form, and should follow the container? Which part is water, and goes into every cup unchanged?
Where it goes wrong: making formlessness into having no centre, so that three containers later there is nothing left; or spending the softness on the stone you were supposed to break.
