Everything is invested and nothing is visible for years. What he did with that stretch, and why it was not waiting.
What actually happened?
A sugar orange tree takes four or five years to bear, and then several more years of adjustment before the fruit is good enough to sell. He was on the hillside every day of it, and not idle. In those years he built the irrigation, had the soil of every plot tested, brought in agricultural researchers to set the fertiliser mix, and cut the planting density from more than a hundred trees per plot to eighty, because crowded trees give sour fruit. The first crop, around 2006, tasted wrong. He kept adjusting. It sold properly in 2012, when he was eighty-four.
The years with no result are the years for the foundations
While the trees carried nothing he built irrigation, tested soil and fixed the fertiliser mix. Those are precisely the jobs there is no time for once there is a crop. When nothing is coming out, the right work is the work that becomes impossible the moment something does.
