He wrote for a living through them, laid brick at home, and painted. Through the thirties he repeated in Parliament that Germany was rearming and British air strength was not keeping pace, was treated as bellicose and out of date, and read aircraft production figures into the record anyway.

In 1928 he joined the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers — an ex-Chancellor applying for membership as a bricklayer, which caused enough of a row that the union later revoked it. He built walls and a cottage at Chartwell with his own hands and wrote to a friend that he was spending his days laying bricks and writing a book. Two hundred bricks and two thousand words a day. It is the most exact description anyone has given of how to survive being shut out.
