What actually happened?
At seventy-one he was finally granted a minor honorary status — not passed, but awarded by seniority to a candidate who had simply been at it long enough. It was the only official recognition of his life and it arrived when it could change nothing. By then he had been writing his 'idle book' for four decades: nearly five hundred stories, revised repeatedly, circulated in manuscript among friends. He died before it was printed, and never knew.
Failure with no turning point
There was no decisive year — not one big defeat and a restart, but once every three years, just short, until he was old. Most advice about failure assumes a turning point to point at. Here there isn't one, and none of it applies.
He never let it be the only thing
He didn't stop sitting the exam and he didn't stake his life on it. The tutoring continued, the family was kept, the stories accumulated. Running things in parallel means that when the thing that never works fails again, something else in your hands is working.
The side thing got real investment
The stories weren't dashed off — forty years, nearly five hundred pieces, repeatedly revised. They were last in his ranking, not last in his investment. And he never quit the job: the tutoring fed him and gave him the forty uninterrupted years.
How do I use it today?
When something you've worked at for years hasn't happened and you can't say when it would, don't start with whether to persist. Ask what else moved forward this year. If you can't name one thing, fill that gap first. And if the side thing is growing, count what you've actually put into it over three years before you talk about swapping their status.
