Epictetus
Not the thing, the view you took of it
Between the event and the pain there is a step you added
Enchiridion 5 and 20
Handbook five is two sentences long. The question worth asking is why it reaches for the death of Socrates as its example.
What actually happened?
Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things. His example is death. Death is nothing terrible, or it would have seemed so to Socrates; what is terrible is the notion that death is terrible. So when we are hindered or disturbed, let us never attribute it to others, but to ourselves. Chapter twenty names the mechanism: what affronts you is not the man who gives the abuse but the view you take of it. So endeavour not to be hurried away with the appearance.
There is a step between the event and the feeling
One event lands completely differently on two people, which means the feeling is not produced by the event. Something gets added in between: your reading of it. That step normally runs automatically and invisibly. Making it visible is what gives you somewhere to intervene.
One curt email. The first reader finds hostility in it, the second finds a man in a hurry. Same email, different manufacture.
Gaining time and respite is the whole technique
The operational half of chapter twenty is its last clause: delay the response. Because the interpreting step is automatic, the only thing that catches it is a gap. A few seconds is enough for the automatic reading to be seen, and once seen it can be swapped.
Answer the message that enraged you twenty minutes later. What you would have said is almost never what you say.
Blaming your own opinion is taking control, not taking blame
Blame yourself reads as self-attack, and it runs the other way. While the source of the pain sits inside another person, you can only wait for that person to change. Move it into your own reading and you have, for the first time, somewhere to put your hands.
He disrespected me, so I am hurt — the handle is his. I read that line as disrespect — the handle is back, and not one fact has moved.
How do I use it today?
Where you are: one sentence, or one incident, is still running hours later.
Ask first: is the pain coming from the thing, or from the reading I gave it? Try a second reading — do the facts still hold?
Where it goes wrong: using it to deny real harm and let the person who did it off; or turning blame your own opinion into one more way of attacking yourself.
Lines to keep
It is not he who gives abuse or blows, who affronts.
Let us never attribute it to others, but to ourselves.
Gain time and respite, and you will more easily command yourself.
