Sima Qian
Disgraced, and finished the book
Sima Qian (Han · c. 145–86 BC) — Disgraced, and finished the book.
What actually happened?
The book he was finishing runs to a hundred and thirty chapters and covers roughly two thousand years, from the Yellow Emperor down to his own emperor. He invented its architecture: annals for the rulers, chronological tables, treatises on ritual and rivers and money, and then a long closing section of individual lives. The lives are not only the great ones. He wrote up assassins, merchants, physicians and court jesters. Two thousand years of Chinese historians copied the form, and almost everything later readers know about the period stands behind his account, including the parts that make his own emperor look bad.
Swap the question about face for a question about work
Can I still show my face has no answer and sinks the longer you hold it. Is anything still unfinished has one, and the answer points at something to do. The letter is that substitution: the shame was not resolved, it was taken off the switch that decided whether he lived.
After a public disgrace, do not ask whether you deserve to be here. Ask what you still owe and to whom.
Find yourself a row of precedents
While a person believes nobody has ever had it this bad, no argument gets in. So he lists them: King Wen in captivity expanding the Book of Changes, Confucius in distress, Qu Yuan banished, Zuo Qiuming blind, Sun Bin without his feet. The list is the remedy, not the reasoning.
If you think you are the only one this unlucky, go and find three who had it worse and finished something.
Staying alive takes one thing only you can finish
The archives were in his hands, his father's notes were in his hands, and the framework was in his head. Nobody else could have produced that book, which is what makes if I go this ends true rather than vain. An obligation handed to you by someone else holds on the days you cannot hold yourself.
Find the thing nobody picks up if you put it down. It carries more weight than any job you could be replaced in.
How do I use it today?
After something you cannot say out loud, stop asking whether you still deserve to be here and ask instead what is unfinished and only yours to finish. Tell the whole of it to exactly one person, start to end. Then work while the shame is still in the room, because it does not leave first.

Lines to keep
The shame was real and so was the work. He let the work speak.
The books that lasted were mostly written in the worst years.
Sometimes staying alive needs a debt left outstanding.
