Family Instructions for the Yan Clan
Running a household
Family Instructions for the Yan Clan (China · late sixth century) — Running a household.
What actually happened?
The preface says plainly why the book exists. Sincerity, filial duty, guarding your speech, making a name - the sages set all of it down long ago, and the writers since have only built a house under a house and a bed on top of a bed. He writes it again for one reason: the same words are believed according to who says them, and the same instruction is followed according to whom the hearer already respects. To stop a child's wild play, a tutor's warning is worth less than the nurse's word. So the book never rises above the floor it is standing on. It is specific enough to act on: how to return a borrowed book, how tight the household money should be, at what age a child can no longer be left to please himself.
He did not want to write another book of sages
The preface concedes the ground is covered and that writing it again is a house built under a house. His reason is not the content but the relation: the same advice is refused from a stranger and taken from someone already respected. He is after his own gate, not the world.
The same suggestion moves nobody from a colleague and moves the room from you.
Custom travels downward
The household chapter opens on direction rather than rules: custom runs from those above to those below and from the earlier to the later, so an unkind father gets an unfilial son. The reverse clause matters as much - once the senior side has done its part, instruction is no longer the tool.
Before asking why no bad news reaches you, recall your face the last time some did.
Teach the wife on arrival, the child in infancy
He had seen too many houses with affection and no instruction: what should be warned is rewarded, what should be rebuked is laughed at. Return once arrogance has set and force buys nothing. What he wants is severity and kindness in the same hand.
What you laughed off when the child was three becomes a hard fight at thirteen.
Brothers cool on their own
Sharing a table and handing clothes down, they could not fail to love each other; with a wife and children each, they could not fail to cool. He treats this as structure and not as character, so his remedy is not a lament but settling things early.
While your parents are alive, put who pays and who turns up on the table.
Frugal yes, mean no
He draws a line inside thrift: to be frugal is to economise according to propriety, to be mean is to withhold from someone in urgent need. Give without extravagance and save without meanness. The same money splits into being hard on yourself and hard on others.
The house that counts every coin is often first to be unavailable when a friend needs one.
What part do we leave out?
We leave out the sections on women and on lineage. The passage in 'Managing a Household' confining a wife to food and clothing and barring her from affairs of state is sixth-century gentry order; it neither supports nor is supported by the arguments about causation, timing and why brothers drift. Those are what we take.
How do I use it today?
If nobody at home or on your team has told you anything unwelcome for a long time, do not start by changing your question. Recall the last time someone did, and what your face did in the first three seconds. He puts the direction upstream, and the inch you can move is at your end. Then take the children: list two things you laughed off in the past month and decide whether each was harmless or whether you were writing a bill for later. His variable is timing rather than force - one sentence does it while the window is open and nothing does it afterwards. Then take the brothers and sisters: while your parents are still alive, get who pays, who turns up and where the old people will live onto the table. On his account the warmth cools by itself once each of you has a household, which is nobody turning bad, and is exactly why feeling cannot be left to hold it.

Lines to keep
Custom runs downward, and downstream fixes spring back.
The time you laughed instead is the bill that arrives later.
Once each has a household, cooling is the default.
Frugal is hard on yourself; mean is hard on others in need.
