An old man puts a young man through a series of pointless humiliations. The question worth asking is what was being tested.
What actually happened?
On the bridge at Xiapi an old man dropped his shoe over the side and told the young Zhang Liang to fetch it. He wanted to hit him, held off because of the man's age, brought it up, then knelt and put it on his foot. The old man walked away laughing and turned back to say the boy can be taught, then set a meeting at dawn five days on. Twice the old man was there first and furious. The third time Zhang Liang went at midnight and waited, and was given a book.
What is tested is whether you can take an unreasonable rule
The old man never explains anything. He sets the terms alone and raises them whenever he likes. What Zhang Liang passes is not a test of temper but a harder practical judgement: with the rules unexplained and plainly unfair, going along still pays more than fighting.
A newcomer meets a pile of customs nobody will justify. Working inside them for three months before objecting buys information that the person objecting in week one never gets.
Restraint has a target
He was not a mild man. He had spent the family fortune to hire a strongman to hurl an iron club at the First Emperor's carriage. The same person would not endure an emperor and would endure an old man. Restraint is a verdict on the occasion, not a temperament.
You can absorb an unreasonable demand about scheduling. You cannot absorb one about the clause the whole contract rests on.
The third attempt was the right one
Both earlier times he thought he had come early and was still late. After the second failure he neither gave up nor argued about the standard. He raised his own by a notch and went at midnight. Most people stop at the second failure to ask whether this means anything.
Twice you did exactly what they asked and it came back. Asking what they actually want is normal. Raising the bar and redoing it is rare, and it returns something else.
