King Wuling of Zhao

Learn From the Lesser

What blocks the new thing is often not difficulty but pride

Records of the Grand Historian, Hereditary House of Zhao

The thing you need to learn comes from people you have always looked down on. How did King Wuling of Zhao get past the shame of learning from barbarians?

What actually happened?

The nomads north of Zhao wore short, narrow-sleeved coats and shot from horseback, coming and going like the wind. Zhao's army wore long robes and wide sleeves and depended on chariots and infantry, so it could not catch them. King Wuling wanted to wear the nomad dress and learn mounted archery, but feared the world would say he had made himself a pupil of barbarians. He told his minister Yi. Yi said that an act you doubt achieves nothing. The king answered: let fools laugh; the wise will see what I see, and even if the whole world laughs, I will take the steppe lands.

Learn what works, not what looks proper

The short coat with narrow sleeves was easy to ride in and easy to draw a bow in, and the nomads had used it for years. The king did not ask whether it was dignified. He asked whether it worked. It was not new in the world, only new to Zhao.

A colleague uses a new tool and finishes in half an hour what took you an afternoon. Before you argue about whether that is real skill, learn how he sets it up.

What blocks you is often pride, not brains

His opponents said the central states were where clever people lived and only barbarians dressed that way. They did not fail to see what archery was worth. They refused to learn from people they thought beneath them. The king put the question plainly: is clothing for use or for show?

A new hire ten years younger knows the new tools best. You pretend you know them and never ask, and a year later that is the gap.

Being laughed at is not proof you are wrong

Laughter shows only that you differ from the crowd, not that you are mistaken. Later Zhao trained cavalry, beat the northern tribes and set up three commanderies on the frontier. That came from a method people had laughed at.

You use an approach your circle scorns and get teased for it. The question is whether it solves the thing you need solved this year.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: something new clearly works, but it comes from people or a field you have never rated, and you keep finding reasons to wait.

Ask first: do I refuse it because it is useless, or because learning it would make me look behind? Would it solve the one thing I must solve this year?

Where it goes wrong: treating every laughed-at idea as foresight. Wuling took up something the nomads had proved, saw it worked, and only then stopped caring who laughed. Check first, then ignore the laughter.

Lines to keep

An act you doubt achieves nothing.

Fools laugh at it; the wise take a closer look.

Let the world laugh; I will have the steppe.
