Rammed by Her Own Fleet: The 1%-Cost Torpedo Boat That Created the Destroyer

In 1908 a 380-ton destroyer was rammed and sunk by a 10,000-ton cruiser during an exercise, killing 35 men. Behind the tragedy sits the torpedo boat, which overturned naval warfare at about 1% of a battleship's cost and forced the destroyer into existence.

The price of one torpedo boat was enough to sink a battleship

The arrival of the torpedo worried the Royal Navy badly: you no longer needed another battleship in order to sink a battleship. The episode uses today's drones as the analogy for this kind of asymmetric threat — a torpedo boat cost only about 1% of a battleship's price, yet it could close on a capital ship under cover of darkness and fire. That was a change in the rules of naval combat: until then, sinking a battleship meant big guns trading fire with big guns; now a small platform could do it. Which is precisely why Britain had to find a new counter, on both cost and numbers.

The destroyer is a ship type the torpedo boat forced into existence

To chase down and intercept torpedo boats, the Royal Navy put the problem out to the shipyards in the 1890s: build a fast ship that could make 30 knots and you were in the fleet. Tiger was a product of that new type, driven by 4 Normand boilers giving about 6,400 shaft horsepower, carrying 86 tons of coal, her volume stuffed with weapons and machinery. The type was first called the torpedo boat destroyer, later shortened to destroyer, and it became the backbone of the twentieth-century fleet — escort, anti-submarine work, air defence — with today's guided-missile destroyers all descended from it.

The faster a ship ran on trials, the sooner she broke down later

Tiger carried only 57-58 men in total, with minimal living space, and was known as a very wet ship: hot, vibrating, pitching badly in heavy weather, with poor seakeeping. The bridge was completely open, with no radar, no GPS and no radio; at night there was nothing to navigate by but compass and dead reckoning. Crueller still, engineers at the time had an in-house joke: the faster a ship ran on her speed trials, the more prone to breakdown she was afterwards, because running at full speed did structural damage to the hull. This is what it looked like when a navy pushed both men and machinery to the limit.

The 1908 night exercise was preparation for Germany

The April 1908 exercise was not a display. An ‘attacking force’ of more than ten destroyers set out from Portsmouth and worked through their own fleet in the dark, simulating torpedo launches with flashing signals to prove they could get in close without being detected. It was run with every ship darkened and no moonlight, because there was no radar and no radio then and reconnaissance was done entirely by eye; destroyers could also deploy quickly along the coast and take on intelligence gathering. Training of this kind was seen as necessary preparation for a war drawing closer — the German fleet was already strong enough.

Nobody knows why she turned to port that night

On the night of the accident Tiger was under orders to follow the leading ship, HMS Recruit, but in the darkness all that was visible was the wake ahead. No one has ever explained why she suddenly turned to port, cutting across Berwick's course. Dave's personal judgement is that they simply never saw Berwick — had they seen her, they would not have crossed in front of a giant ship bearing down on them. That night there were many formations of large ships, dense manoeuvring and total darkness; the accident was almost unavoidable. Years earlier, Tiger had already come close to a collision in a similar exercise.

A ram designed to kill enemies cut open a friendly ship

Berwick displaced about 10,000 tons; Tiger displaced 380 tons light and 425 tons at full load — a difference in mass of 20-25 times. The irony goes further: what Berwick carried in her bow was a ram, designed specifically to sink enemy ships, a ‘weapon of the future’ — and in a peacetime exercise it cut into a friendly ship like a hot knife through butter. By the time the two saw each other there were only about 100 yards left; in a few seconds there was no time at all to react. Berwick's bow made the tragedy unavoidable, however unintended.

She went down in three minutes and no one on the bridge survived

The collision happened at 8:15 pm; within 3 minutes the stern was under water, and 1-2 minutes after that the bow disappeared. Of the 57-58 crew, 35 died in the lower compartments, including the captain, Lieutenant William Middleton. No one on the bridge survived, so who gave the orders in those last few seconds, and why, will never be known; the court martial could not explain it either. The tragedy was major national news at the time: King Edward VII sent a personal message of condolence, questions were asked in Parliament, and the navy sent several cruisers and tugs to search for days — without ever finding the wreck.

The engine telegraph pointer still stands at ‘full ahead’

The dive team found Tiger at 62 metres off the Isle of Wight; because they were using specialist rebreathers, their time underwater was limited. The first thing Leo saw was the fourth Normand boiler aft, which immediately confirmed this was a 30-knotter. The most important evidence came from the engine telegraph: the pointer still stands at ‘full ahead’, and the rudder indicator shows only 5-7 degrees of starboard helm, meaning she had neither slowed down nor made any pronounced turn. Yet the transmission chain from the bridge to the engine room was severed at the moment of impact, so even an order given could not have got through. The wreck is well preserved: compass, wheel, telegraph and ship's bell are all still in place.

The generation of destroyers required to make 30 knots.

A reinforced structure projecting forward below the waterline at the bow, designed to sink enemy ships by ramming.
