The father of linoleum never trademarked it, and even the name became public property
Frederick Walton invented linoleum but lost the name because he never registered it as a trademark; the process that actually set the industry standard came from a man on his payroll, C.F. Leak.

He cut off his family fallback before he started experimenting
Walton was born in 1834 into three generations of cloth frizzers. His father, James, was fiercely secretive about the craft and would not let his son alter the machines. Frederick was fascinated by machinery but did not want to inherit the business, so at 27 he left the family firm for London to work on his own, giving up both his share of the profits and his income from his father's company. This is the starting point for understanding every financial problem that followed: he was not inventing from a position of security, he cut off his retreat first and experimented afterwards.
The paint-skin flash of inspiration was probably tidied up later
By his own account, a paint can in his laboratory had formed the usual dried film of oil on the surface, and he noticed that this skin held together and had a rubbery elasticity. So he began oxidizing linseed oil systematically, blending in resins and gums to make Campticon, then combining that with coal dust to get a floor cloth similar to Camptulicon. The hosts flag this explicitly: the "he saw the skin on the paint" version may be a neat story constructed after the fact, and the real process was very likely far less smooth.
Early linoleum work was propped up by loans from his father
Frederick burned through his money fast and proposed that his father advance him his inheritance: a thousand pounds up front, then seven or eight hundred pounds every quarter after that. His father refused and would not even discuss it; the help Frederick got from his brother William was spent too. In the end his father would only lend small sums at interest, Frederick's debts to him ran past eight thousand pounds, and his father cut him off again in anger. This stretch shows that early linoleum development was carried almost entirely on family money, and it explains the attitude he later took to insuring his factory.
Linoleum was not inspiration, it was ground out a few millimeters at a time
He tried to peel the oxidized oil film off oiled cloth and could not, so he simply ground thin cotton into a pulp, heated rosin, poured the mix onto the floor and let it set; once set, it was cut, aged and milled, then blended a second time with cork dust and pigment. Repeating this cycle over and over built up only a few millimeters in several weeks. To scale it up he built large open oil pans and iron racks, where a single dip of cloth needed about a day to dry. Read this and you see that inventing linoleum was not a flash of insight about "a piece of flooring" but painful process engineering.
Full insurance let him turn a factory fire into an expansion
His factory at Grove in England burned down a few weeks before his lecture at the Society of Arts. Because the raw materials were highly flammable, Walton had taken out very large, fully covering insurance in advance, so the fire cost him almost nothing financially and he could immediately build a bigger purpose-built plant. In January 1864 he moved again, into a former textile mill at Staines, and in June he founded the Staines Linoleum Manufacturing Company Limited. The genuinely valuable detail here is not the invention but the use of insurance to convert process risk into an opportunity to expand.
What rewrote the industry came from his employee, not from Walton
Walton's core patent expired in 1877, and competitors began calling their own oil cloth linoleum. He sued and lost, because linoleum had never been registered as a trademark and was ruled a generic name. The bigger turn came in 1880, when his employee C.F. Leak developed a process that used a stencil to drive color all the way through the material to form a mosaic inlaid pattern; Walton kept improving on Leak's foundation and obtained a patent for a continuous inlaid machine in 1890. The process was strong enough that competitors could only buy machines from him. This stretch takes the "lone genius invents it" narrative apart into a corporate system.
Linoleum was once capital-heavy industry, not a cheap substitute
A late-19th-century German factory was documented in an article titled "Cork Carpets": once the cork dust was milled it went into oil pools that held roughly a million pounds of painter's-grade linseed oil at a time; in the oxidizing rooms the oil turned into long translucent sheets, oxidizing naturally for six to eight months, then was crushed, mixed with fossil resins, kneaded and rolled onto canvas. The author described linoleum as having the warmth and sound absorption of carpet, the elasticity and water resistance of rubber, and the cleanliness of the old oil cloth. It shows that linoleum was once a heavy, large-scale industry rather than a cheap stand-in.
At ninety, the inventor treated religion as a product of evolution
In 1925 Walton wrote "The Infancy and Development of Linoleum Floor Cloth," and at the end he turned to scientific progress and animal origins. He said he had lived to see everything from railways to airplanes, granted that "our animal origin has undoubtedly been proven," but expressed disappointment that human beings still slaughter one another, holding that it would take millions of years of moral evolution to come close to perfection. He also compared religion to language, arguing both were products of evolution, and sensed that the passage would offend some of his colleagues. The worldview of a ninety-year-old inventor turns out to be more surprising than linoleum itself.

there was a paint pot in the laboratory and as usual, a skin or surface of dried oil had formed upon it. It occurred to me that I could use it as a waterproofing material similar to India rubber.
This invention has for its object improvements in the making of fabrics for covering floors and other surfaces. Canvas or other suitable strong fabrics are coated over their upper surfaces with a composition consisting of oxidized oil, coal, dust, and gum or resin preferring Cowie or New Zealand gum.
Whilst engaged about two years ago in a series of experiments on the manufacture of artificial leather, it was of the greatest importance to the success of the material that it should have a coat of fine varnish, which, whilst drying, quickly possessed the flexibility of India rubber.

When I think of the extraordinary progress of science and scientific research that has taken place since I was born, I am filled with wonder, and I am tempted at times to allow my fancy to dwell upon what may happen in the years to come.
I may be wrong, but I firmly believe that nothing short of a long evolution, extending over countless centuries or even millions of years, will bring us to that perfection which many of us see in our dreams, but which can never be realized except in the imagination of those who picture they most desire.
