3M Knew for Decades, and Let a Scientist Believe She Was Wrong
3M knew in the 1970s that PFOS had entered ordinary people's blood, yet let the young scientist who found it be questioned into giving up. The secret wasn't kept by destroying documents — it was kept by getting the people who knew to silence themselves.

Chris Hansen joined 3M's environmental laboratory in 1996, and her first assignment came from an anomaly: when an outside lab measured PFOS in workers' blood, it also detected suspected PFOS in the blood bank blood being used as a control. Blood bank blood comes from ordinary people with no connection to 3M, and should not contain the substance. Her boss told her to figure out what it was so it could be ruled out and accurate worker blood numbers obtained. She improved the extraction and analysis methods and verified repeatedly, and the conclusion was: it wasn't an interference, it was PFOS, and it was in every ordinary-population blood sample she tested.
The more data she had, the more colleagues thought she was wrong
She reported the results to her boss, Jim Johnson, who said "this changes everything," then walked into his office and shut the door, and retired early a few weeks later. After that she faced systematic doubt: maybe the instrument wasn't clean, maybe the extraction process contaminated the samples. Someone even had her test their own horse's blood, and when PFOS came up the person cheered, taking it as proof she was wrong — because the horse had never stepped on a Scotchgard carpet or eaten at McDonald's. She went on to test chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits, rats, eagles, albatrosses and fish, and the answer was always "yes." The more data she had, the more her colleagues felt it couldn't possibly be true.
The only thing that could convince them was blood without PFOS
Her colleagues' logic was: as long as no sample free of PFOS could be found, they wouldn't believe this was really PFOS. So she turned to archived samples, and eventually found a batch of blood from Korean War recruits from the early 1950s, collected before products containing forever chemicals were mass-produced and sold. This was the first set of data in which PFOS could not be detected. She described that moment as the relief of "I'm not crazy, this is real," followed immediately by something close to despair — because it also proved the reverse: this was a chemical 3M had put into the world, and 3M was the source.
Someone inside the company had known for twenty years
She happened to read an old paper measuring forever chemicals in human blood, saw that one of the authors was still at 3M, and arranged to meet the person. The scientist was friendly and said, "I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about this. We've known about this since the 1970s." She was stunned: you've known for twenty years that PFOS is in the blood of the general population? The person said, yes, and didn't understand why it was only now causing a fuss. Only then did she realize she wasn't the first discoverer but the second — at least someone inside the company had known all along.
The CEO fell asleep while she was briefing him
In early 1999 she was summoned to the executive floor to brief the CEO. She prepared a large stack of transparencies, took the dedicated elevator up, and had to show her badge again at the administrative assistant's desk. She sat at one end of a long table, and at the other end were five or six men in white shirts and jackets, dressed identically, with the CEO at the far end. Someone said contemptuously, "just get to the point," followed by a string of questions: Are you one hundred percent sure? Is there another explanation? Who told you to do this research? When she looked up, the CEO's eyes were drooping and his chin was sagging — he was asleep. He didn't say a word the entire meeting, and finally a business leader waved her away.
Colleagues accused her of destroying other people's careers
A few months later, at a picnic for 3M's top scientists, a senior scientist came over and asked her whether she thought she had the right to destroy other people's careers, and whether she went looking for this kind of problem out of envy for people who create solutions rather than problems. The person stressed that she wasn't hurting the company but the scientists who had invented these chemicals. She didn't argue back, chose to keep her head down and seal the experience away, and transferred to a department unrelated to these chemicals. She explained that her reason for not leaving at the time was practical: her husband was still in school, twins were about to be born, this was her first job, and she had already acquired a reputation as a "troublemaker."
The secret wasn't kept by destroying documents
The question Sharon pursued for ten years — how, in a company with thousands of employees, could a secret this big be kept — has an answer that isn't burned records or violent threats. In this story, part of it was persistently and harshly questioning a young employee until she finally gave up raising the matter again. Another part was that Chris didn't hold all the information: her boss told her these chemicals weren't toxic, and she clung to that, because if she admitted they were harmful and they were already everywhere, the scale of it was something she couldn't bear. She said she was living at the time inside a fantasy that "it's not harmful."
Both bosses knew from beginning to end
Litigation forced 3M to hand over more internal documents, and in them Sharon found a document written by Jim Johnson, addressed to the very person who later became Chris's second boss. In other words, the person who assigned her the task and the person who later pretended to know nothing both knew the answer. Sharon called Jim Johnson, who picked up and said he was a "good soldier and a loyal soldier," and that keeping secrets for a good employer was the right thing to do. He claimed that back then he had wanted the information to come out, which was why he gave Chris the blood analysis assignment — in effect planting the seed. He compared Chris to a vending machine: he knew what he put in, and he got the result he expected.
