Decacorns never use scroll hijacking, but every AI-built site does

Scroll hijacking disrupts the scroll rhythm users internalize; when timing is off, it's jarring. Decacorn homepages never do it—it has become a tell for AI-quickbuilt sites.

Engineers, not designers, built an actual design tool

Alex and his cofounder are both former frontend engineers, not designers. A YC partner suggested they focus on what they actually know—converting Figma designs to code—which became Magic Patterns' starting point. When it launched in October 2023, V0 was the only comparable product on the market, but the model was too weak even for conversational interaction; it could only do one-shot prompts with no iterative refinement.

An offhand hackathon MCP became the main way users integrate

Finding the core product idea took 9 months of false starts: a text analyzer, component library editor, a Storybook-like tool—nothing attracted real paying users. The actual breakthrough came when people bought immediately after launch. Later, an internal hackathon project adding MCP integration surprised everyone by becoming a primary integration method. Alex's takeaway: companies must constantly adapt to new workflows instead of defending their first product shape.

The canvas isn't actually the interface most users want

The canvas feature has existed for approximately 2 years, but the team discovered many users don't choose it—they want a single-thread chat box and no freeform canvas. They're hiring a designer to solve the progressive-disclosure problem: when should users learn the canvas is available? The newly released version is rebranded as OS instead of canvas, because the goal is integrating all context—images, PRDs, documents—not mimicking Figma's tool-packed UI.

Breaking scenes into components lets AI draft full 3D worlds in one pass

A user built a chocolate-themed amusement park in the style of Tycoon games—unimaginable years ago, when a form prompt might return only a dropdown. Now, breaking the track, coasters, and walkways into components lets AI draft the whole park in one or two prompts. Alex sees this as evidence that design is moving from its historical 2D form toward letting users directly design high-fidelity 3D interactions.

Removing the prompt box from the homepage kills conversion

A cautionary example from Magic Patterns itself: they removed the homepage prompt box to appear more creative, and conversion plummeted instantly. That's why nearly every AI tool keeps that box. Aaron adds a parallel test from Creative Market: unfolding the form directly on the page outconverts making users click through, pop open a modal, or jump to an email gate.

No decacorn homepage uses scroll hijacking—ever

Sentient OS's homepage uses scroll hijacking to show a laptop sleeping, then waking to complete work—visually clever but the timing breaks user habit; the page keeps scrolling after you release, which feels jarring. Alex's ruling rubric is direct: check any $100 billion–valued company homepage. None use scroll hijacking, because it doesn't convert and it annoys people. That said, they acknowledge the animation does strengthen the concept itself (closing the laptop = sleep, opening = work done), which is animation's proper job.

Random bolding of prepositions is how you spot AI-written copy

On Cerno Vis's homepage, they found words like "and" randomly bolded mid-sentence. Alex: this is a known fingerprint of AI-generated text. Same with typeface—Space Grotesque and Instrument Serif are the defaults that every AI design tool outputs, like em-dashes in AI prose. The advice is to resist the default typeface and boilerplate voice; use something truly yours so the design doesn't look dated when you revisit it in 5 to 10 years.

Good design no longer means slow

Everyone on the team does customer support, and Alex has seen users miss a share button because two button colors were identical. On balancing polish and shipping speed, his view is clear: people say craft must be slow, but code is written so fast now that the old either-or doesn't hold. If you believe polish matters, you can do both fast and well.

I've said this before on a video, like customers are our religion.

One of the initial learnings that we had is like a canvas is not necessarily for everyone.

Alex Danilovich10:05

the track is a component. The chocolate bar twister ride is a component. The paths that guests walk on are components.

Alex Danilovich16:09

when you had the input form it visible and expanded directly on the page, conversion rate was much higher than requiring somebody to click through to then put in an email address or pop up a window or get to the form or something like that.

Aaron20:10

please everybody, please stop scroll jacking. Stop scroll jacking. Just keep the normal scroll.

Aaron25:11

the best version of an animation is not animation for animation's sake, but animation that actually reinforces the point that you're trying to make and communicate something in a way that just being static would not have been able to do.

Another sign of AI writing, actually, is you can look this up on Wikipedia is when random words are are bolded, right?
