Wang Jian

Asking for fields and houses

Hand them a hold over you

Records of the Grand Historian, Bai Qi and Wang Jian

Holding almost every soldier in the state, how do you let the king sleep? This is about choosing to look greedy.

Wang JianHand them a hold over you

What actually happened?

Wang Jian set out with six hundred thousand men, very nearly the whole army of Qin in one pair of hands. Before leaving he asked the king for a large grant of good fields, houses, gardens and ponds. Go on, said the king, laughing, why worry about being poor. At Hangu Pass he sent men back five more times to ask for good land. Someone told him he was asking too much. The king is suspicious and trusts nobody, he said; he has handed me the whole army, and if I do not ask for a great deal, would I not leave him sitting there doubting me?

When you could threaten them, show a weakness on purpose

Holding the army and wanting nothing does not read as high-minded to a suspicious king. It reads as a larger design. What Wang Jian supplied was a want that could be understood, quantified, and withdrawn at any time. Greed is a reassuring weakness to have.

The one person holding a company's only core technology, if visibly indifferent to money and title, unsettles people. Being known to want something is safer.

Ask for what they can afford to give

Fields and ponds cost the king almost nothing and could be granted. Had Wang Jian asked for a marquisate, for troops, for standing, the request would itself have become the new threat. The trick lies in the nature of the thing asked for: small, specific, and revocable at will.

Asking in a negotiation for cash and a defined title is easier to grant, and raises fewer alarms, than asking for vaguer influence over decisions.

Five times was deliberate

He did not ask once. He asked five more times on the march. A single request reads as normal. Repeating it until it is nearly embarrassing is what builds a signal that keeps transmitting, through exactly the stretch when the king most needs reassurance.

Reporting your progress and your difficulties over and over during a critical project looks like fussing. It is continuous dissolving of the other side's uncertainty.

How do I use it today?

Where you are: what you hold, or what you can do, has become large enough to make the people above you uneasy.

Ask first: do they know what I want, and is it something they can comfortably give?

Where it goes wrong: assuming that wanting nothing is the safest posture; and asking, when you do ask, for power or standing, which becomes the new threat.

Lines to keep

Would I not leave him sitting there doubting me?

A want they can see is safer than a want they have to guess.
