Someone says you want the seat, while you hold up a job nobody else can take. Why did the Duke of Zhou stay, and what did he do next?
What actually happened?
When King Wu died, his son King Cheng was still a boy, and the Duke of Zhou ran the state in his name. His brothers began to spread word that he meant to harm the young king. The duke did not rush to defend himself. He went to see Taigong Wang and Duke Shao, the two elders who shared the work, and told them: I will not step aside, because if I do the whole realm may turn against Zhou, and I would have no answer for the late kings. Then, at the king's command, he led the army that put down his brothers' revolt.
Tell the people carrying the load with you
He did not argue first with the rumour-mongers or plead first with the king. He went to the two elders who held the court up beside him. A rumour first shakes your partners' trust in you, and if they stop trusting you, the work stops with them.
People say you are after the project. Before you defend yourself in the group chat, sit down with the two colleagues you actually build it with.
Argue the job, not your innocence
He did not say 'I have no such ambition.' He said: the king is dead, his heir is a child, and this has to be done. Leaving would have saved his name and lost the realm. The question is what happens to the work if you go, not what people think of you.
You took the mess nobody wanted, and now someone says you are climbing. Ask whether anyone else would pick it up if you put it down.
Let finished work speak
A suspected person cannot talk their way clear. The duke put the revolt down and did the next job, then the next. Years later, when the king opened the duke's old prayer, he found what the duke had always done, not what he had said in his own defence.
In the quarter when people doubt you, deliver what you promised on time. It does more than telling them weekly that you can be trusted.

Where you are: someone says you have a hidden aim, while you are holding up work nobody else can take.
Ask first: if I step aside, does anyone pick this up? Have I told the two or three people who carry it with me?
Where it goes wrong: staying is not the same as ignoring suspicion. The duke had partners who vouched for him and a child king no one else could stand in for. With only your hurt feelings and no one vouching, digging in confirms the doubt.
